Geography
Maafushi is a local, inhabited island in the Maldives,a country in South Asia, approximately 500km south-west of southern tip of India. Interestingly, the Maldives are one of the most dispersed countries in the world, situated on the Indian Ocean just above and below the equator.
Out of 1200 islands only about 200 are inhabited by the Maldivian people. The islands are grouped in 26 atolls (or coral atolls), which are basically ring-shaped coral reefs enclosing the lagoons. The coral reefs are only to be encountered in warm waters of the tropical or subtropical climate.
The Maafushi island is in the South Male' (Kaafu Atoll) and can be reached from Male International airport within 30 minutes by speedboat or 1.5-2 hours by ferry.
Climate
Maafushi, as well as all the islands in the Maldives, is characterised by a tropical climate with temperatures ranging between 24-33C (75-91F) and an average of 27C (80F) and 8 hours of sunshine all year round.
There are two seasons in the island of Maafushi: dry season (November-March) with little rain and lower humidity and wet season (April-October) with more chance of rainfall and higher humidity.
As for the wet season you need to bear in mind that the rain in tropical islands is intense but warm and lasts for a short time. It also gives you a chance to cool off from the tropical sun for a while. Expect a little rain anytime during the year as a characteristic feature of the tropical regions.
Tourism
The population of Maafushi is about 2700, most of it being native Maldivians. As of 2010 the Maldivian government allowed local inhabitants to open guest houses, bringing in foreign tourists and providing the local economy with foreign currency.
Before the year 2010 tourism in Maldives was restricted to so called resort islands, ran only by businessmen and several international companies. With the beginning of the year 2010 a new era in local tourism has started, making it possible to growm local tourism more even than before.
